BIAB vs Gel Nails: Which One Is Right for Your Nails?

Close-up comparison of BIAB builder gel and gel polish manicure on natural nails

It's one of the most common questions we get asked. Both treatments last longer than regular polish, both look similar in photos, and both involve UV curing. So what's actually different — and which one makes sense for you?

Here's a plain explanation of each, without the marketing language.

What is gel polish?

Gel polish is exactly what it sounds like: a gel-based nail colour that's cured (hardened) under a UV or LED lamp. It goes on in layers — base coat, colour, topcoat — and each layer is cured between applications.

The result is a smooth, glossy finish that resists chipping far better than regular lacquer. In most cases, a gel manicure will last two to three weeks before lifting or growing out enough to need a refresh. It doesn't add structural thickness or strength to the nail — it's a coating, not a treatment.

At ManiTheory, gel manicure starts from €50.

What is BIAB?

BIAB stands for Builder In A Bottle. It's a product — specifically a thick, self-levelling builder gel — not a brand or technique. It was developed as an alternative to traditional hard gels, which required separate primer and builder products.

Where gel polish sits on top of your nail as a colour coat, BIAB forms a structural layer over the nail itself. It's applied in a thicker layer, cured, shaped, and then finished with a gel topcoat (and colour, if you want it). The result is a harder overlay that can add a small amount of length and gives the nail physical reinforcement.

This is why it's often recommended for people with brittle, soft or thin nails — it protects the natural nail underneath while it grows. It's also popular for people who are trying to grow their nails out without them breaking.

At ManiTheory, BIAB manicure starts from €55.

Who should choose gel?

Gel polish works well if your nails are reasonably healthy and you mostly want long-lasting colour. It's a good everyday option — quick to apply, easy to maintain, wide range of colours. If you get your nails done regularly and aren't dealing with breakage or brittleness, gel is probably fine.

Who should choose BIAB?

BIAB tends to suit people with thinner, weaker or brittle nails. If your nails break before they grow to any length, or if you've had damage from previous gel removal, BIAB can help. It's also popular with people who want a bit more length without committing to full extensions.

That said, it's not a treatment for damaged nails in a medical sense. If your nails are unusually thin or you have concerns about nail health, it's worth speaking to a GP or dermatologist first.

What about removal?

Both need proper removal — not peeling. Gel polish soaks off with acetone-soaked wraps; BIAB also soaks off but may take a little longer due to the thicker application. Attempting to peel or pick off either product is a reliable way to damage the nail plate beneath.

If you're booking a removal alongside a new set, mention it when you book so we can allocate enough time.

Still not sure?

That's fine — it's genuinely a common question and the right choice often depends on your nail condition at the time. Call us or mention your uncertainty in the booking form and we can advise before you come in.
